House music is characterized by a steady 4/4 drum beat (electronic) and a prominent bass line. The steady tempo (usually between 118 and 135 beats per minute) created ideal music for dancing. The bass and kick drum generally play on all four beats of the measure, a characteristic of most all popular dance styles (like disco of the 1970s). The other percussive sounds play offbeat patterns. House was the music of raves at which attendees danced until dawn. Raves were also associated with drug use, ecstasy in particular, which no doubt enhanced the trance like and heavy bass beat. Techno and trance were the two most prominent dance styles to branch off of house.
